How to Configure Remote Installation Services(RIS Server)

Step 1. (This will take some time so be patient…)
Install The os by booting from the Windows Server 2003 CD, make sure to have one partition
for the os (windows 2003 server) and one partition to be used purely as the RIS share
Once the os is fully installed and relavant drivers installed, Click on ‘Add or remove a role’ in the
Manage your server dialog box

click ‘next’ to continue, ignore any DHCP errors for your network controller as we will be making
this a DHCP server shortly…
Choose ‘custom configuration’ and scroll down to the ‘Domain Controller (Active directory)
option

You’ll then see the following screen

You wil now see an Active Directory Installation Wizard pop up

Click next to continue

click next again to continue and select the following configuration

Next we have to give it a DNS name

Then the Netbios name

And then it’ll prompt for the database and log folders, go with the defaults as below

If you get a DNS diagnostic Failed error simply choose to ‘Install and configure the DNS…
(second option)
Note:
· The error you have experienced while using the Active Directory Installation
Wizard does not prevent you from successfully promoting this server to a domain
controller. You may continue to promote this server and then correct its DNS
configuration following promotion.

Set your permissions as above
Then enter a password for restore mode !

Review the actions performed

Click next and it will configure your server

You may be prompted to insert the Windows 2003 Server CD

If you have a network cards installed and setup to receive its IP from another DHCP
server (a router for example) then you may get an error like this

I chose Local area connection, then properties, then TCP/IP properties and manually
added the following:Manually
configure the network cards tcpip properties for 192.168.3.1

I then clicked on OK *(three times)
If you get a message about it using the localhost ip for DNS then click OK.
At this point the wizard may appear to be hanging, but it isnt,’ just be patient and wait
until it completes (can take 15 minutes or so)
When ist ’finished youll’ see this
+
After clicking finish youll’ be asked to restart.

reboot when
prompted.
After the reboot you should see this

Click Finish and then click ‘Add or remove a role’ in the Manage your server dialog box.
Click next and then continue (ignore this error if you get it)

scroll down to DHCP server and click next.

The wizard will probably copy some files from the Windows 2003 server CD

Next we need to configure our scope (New Scope Wizard)

Don’t bother to add any exclusions (just click next)

Leave the lease duration as default, and next select No, I will configure these options later for
the DHCP scope options

Now we need to activate the scope, click on Start/All Programs/Administrative tools/DHCP

right click on the highlighted scope and choose activate then
right click on the DHCP server with the red mark above the scope, and choose Authorize

Once done you should now have the DHCP server scope activated and the DHCP server
authorized in active directory. If the DHCP server doesn’t appear green hit the Refresh button a
few times.

Ok, that was Step 1, took a bit of time didn’t it ??
Step 2.
Click on ‘add or remove programs’ in Control panel
chose ‘Add/remove Windows Components’

Scroll down to ‘Remote Installation Services’, place a check mark in the empty box and click
next to continue. (Windows will prompt for the Server CD so make sure it’s in the drive).

Once done, click Finish

and reboot the computer when prompted to do so by clicking on
Yes
Step 3. Starting the RIS server process.
Click on the Start menu and ‘run’, type risetup and click ok
point

point the RIS installation folder to a separate partition from the OS

Insert the Windows XP SP2 VLK cd, and Tell windows where the XP cd is goingto be (in this case
drive F:)

Reboot the computer
at this point the Server should now be ready to use a RIS server.
